Have you ever hit a period where your enthusiasm for work hits rock bottom and you start to wonder if you would be better off giving up and looking for employment instead?  Everyone at some point loses their motivation and business owners are no different.  Sometimes it is just that Monday morning feeling and it passes by lunchtime but sometimes it is much harder to shake.

Fall in love with your business again, motivationIdentify Why

The first step in fixing the problem is to figure out why you feel this way or what has happened to cause this.  It could be one of a number of things such as your business has slowed down, new competition in your market place, loss of confidence or a personal reason such as family issues or just that you’ve been working too hard and are tired.  Whatever the reason, it is best to address it quickly.

Tips for Getting Back on Track

Don’t be tempted to just work through it and hope the feeling goes away.  It is much better to take some practical steps to get your passion for your business back.  The following are a few tips that may help:

  • Back to the beginning – Remember why you started your business in the first place.  What was it that drove you to strike out on your own, away from the security of employment?  Think about the excitement you felt in those early days when you were just starting out on your journey.
  • Achievements – What have you achieved so far?  Think about your successes and all of the things that have gone well.  Never be afraid to congratulate yourself on a job well done.
  • Planning – Your business plan should be a working document that you refer to often but if not, revisit it to make sure it is still relevant and you are not going off-track from your plans for the year.  If your business plan hasn’t been updated for a while or you don’t have one this is a great time to put one together as a well thought out business plan can be a fantastic way of refocussing.
  • Goals – Set some new goals.  Having targets for your business is essential and gives you a great indicator of how you are doing – if you are beating your current targets comfortably then maybe stretch them a little but if you are not Winninghitting them, look into why that is happening and address the issues.  It is also a fantastic idea to have some non-work targets too.  This could be a luxury holiday, a new car or some home improvements for example.  Keep a photo of your goal on your desk as a visual representation to remind you of why you are working so hard.
  • Be Positive – Don’t let negativity drown you.  Even if you’ve made a mistake that cost your company some business or have hit a low period in sales for example, treat it as an experience that you can learn from.  Look at what went wrong, what you have learned from it and how you can improve on it in the future.  Try to extract the positives from every situation, however difficult, instead of dwelling on the negatives.
  • Get Inspired – Take inspiration from the world around you.  Read books by people you admire, take notice of tales of courage in the media and look at the people closest to you.  Sometimes even something as simple as watching young children playing and coming up with fantastic games from their imaginations can help you to see the light on a dark day.
  • Don’t Struggle Alone – Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  Either speak to a friend, family member or contact that you trust or seek professional help to guide you through any areas that you are struggling with.  No one is an expert on everything that goes into running a business so take advice on the areas that are not your specialisms.

So basically you need to recap, analyse, plan and move forward whilst keeping a positive frame of mind.  Remember why you do what you do and what you love about it.  Don’t forget that there is help available if you need it.  Spartan Consultants specialise in business consultancy which can include refocussing, planning and strategy as well as ongoing support to help guide you.  With our friendly and flexible approach, we will listen to you about what you want to achieve and then help you get there.  Feel free to contact us for further information.
